When children witness domestic violence this often puts them at risk of continuing the cycle, either by becoming perpetrators or victims in their adulthood.
Unfortunately, domestic violence is a common practice and well kept secret in many cultures around the globe. Often speaking up against domestic violence is taboo and passively discouraged by family members, friends, and society. Depriving survivors from speaking causes a profound negative psychological and behavioral impact on their lives every day.
The survivors are likely to experience denial, self harm, depression, substance abuse, school difficulties, homelessness, health and socio-economic consequences.
The healing process is doable but will require your courage and support to speak out loud. It’s crucial to reclaim your power and control by telling your story and seeking help. Remember, you are not alone!
That’s why Marie Mambu Makaya Foundation partnered with Women & One Acts (W&OA), to produce a one-night-only staged reading of
“No More Secrets: Survivor Voices from the Second Step” by Lisa Rafferty to raise money for survivors of domestic.
The event was extremely successful and the actresses did wonderful work talking about their own experiences and the painful journey of the survivors.
